FACTS ABOUT HAND SANITIZERS

Does Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitizer Kill Flu Virus?

"It does if it's alcohol-based. Hand sanitizer contains alcohol or other ingredients. It basically inactivates the virus or the bacteria. You need rub hand sanitizer in for about 20 seconds before it's truly effective."

Dr. Gregory Poland, director of the Mayo Clinic Vaccine Research Group.

If soap and water are not available...

"Using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can help you avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others."

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov)

Does hand sanitizer work?

It works exceedingly well for most bacteria and viruses. It reduces the skin burden of bacteria much more effectively than soap and water and the amount of bacteria on the skin tends to remain lower for much longer than when soap and water is used.

Professor James Scott, University of Toronto
